Mission:
Environment Las Americas is committed to cutting-edge teaching and advocacy that promotes rapid and profound change in human behaviour toward the environment.

We use Integral Sustainability Education (ISE) to empower the next generation of leaders to think and act holistically about the interdependence between their internal and external environments.

Through innovative high school and university ISE curriculum development, we are working to help safeguard the environmental health of the Americas.

Environment Las Americas / Environment Bolivia is incorporated in the state of Maine, USA and Bolivia, and has US 501 (c) 3 and Bolivian Nongovernmental Organization (NGO) status.

Recent Accomplishments:


  • Environment Las Americas co-led the Bolivian implementation of the 2006 Global Stop Climate Change Day.  In preparation for the event, Environment Las Americas staff appeared on three national television stations and over twenty local radio and television stations to discuss climate change.
  • A capacity crowd of 1,200 attended Environment Las Americas' free showing of Al Gore's film 'An Inconvenient Truth' in December 2006. 
  • The proposed new Bolivian Constitution incorporates five of our enironmental amendments.  Our language has also become integrated into popular dialogue on the subject. 
  • Environment Las Americas succeeded in slowing the amount of trash-burning that occurs in our neighborhood, by relocating garbage collection as well as lobbying for, and receiving, a government-sponsored sign prohibiting the practice.

  • Our environmental constitutional amendment proposal received 18 letters of support from different social, political, and environmental organizations. Read the campaign's summary.

Air Pollution
     Cochabamba is one of the worst cities in Bolivia concerning air quality. Trash burning, exhaust from cars and trucks, frequent forest fires in the near by Tunari National Park, as well as dust particles kicked up by winds and traffic all contribute to the poor air quality. This situation poses a serious health risk.

Pesticides and Chemical Pollution
     Unregulated dumping introduces toxic chemicals into both the air and water system in Cochabamba. These photos are from a frequent dumping area less than a block away from the Environment Las Americas office.

Water Pollution
     In a town where the struggle for water rights has historically taken central stage, the dangerous levels of contamination due to illegal dumping continue to threaten water sources. A prime example of a the problem is Laguna Alalay which is chocked with invasive algae.
